Thalasso Legacy Week at Vilalara: Six Decades of Wellness by the Atlantic

There are some wellness experiences that feel particularly special because they are so closely connected to the place where they take place, and Vilalara is one of those rare properties where wellness has been part of its identity for decades. This September, as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, Vilalara is inviting guests to experience Thalasso Legacy Week, taking place from 21–28 September 2026, a special week dedicated to the property’s long-standing thalassotherapy heritage and its holistic approach to wellbeing.

For those of you who are interested in wellness travel, thalassotherapy, yoga, movement and experiences that allow you to properly slow down and reconnect with yourself, this is a week that I think is particularly worth knowing about.

Six decades of wellness by the Atlantic

Set above the Atlantic Ocean in the Algarve, Vilalara has been dedicated to thalassotherapy and wellbeing for six decades, and the sea has always been an important part of that philosophy. Thalassotherapy uses warmed seawater as part of therapeutic treatments, bringing the sea into the wellness experience itself rather than simply enjoying it as a beautiful backdrop, and this relationship between the Atlantic and wellbeing is something that feels very natural at Vilalara.

For this special anniversary week, the property is bringing together its thalasso heritage with a broader and more contemporary approach to wellbeing, with a program that includes movement, yoga, breathwork, sound healing, therapeutic practices and psychology. Across the eight days there will be 25 group classes, 24 private sessions and three workshops, with group classes limited to a maximum of eight guests, creating a much more personal and intimate experience than you might normally find at a larger wellness event.

Three practitioners bringing different perspectives on wellbeing

One of the highlights of the week is the opportunity to work with three practitioners, each bringing a very different perspective and area of expertise to the program.

Gudrun Docherty, a therapeutic yoga and movement specialist, will lead sessions including Mobility for Life, Mindful Motion, Inner Flow Yoga and The Art of Breathing. Her approach is focused on improving mobility, releasing tension and helping guests reconnect movement with breath, and I particularly like the sound of Mindful Motion, a gentle therapeutic practice designed to work with the spine, hips and shoulders through slow and intentional movement.

João Palma, whose work brings together yoga, osteopathy and sound healing, will offer Hatha Yoga, Therapeutic Movement, Sound Healing, Thalassa Sound Healing and Thai Yoga Massage. One of the experiences that immediately caught my attention is Thalassa Sound Healing, where Tibetan singing bowls are played in water, allowing the vibrations to travel through the body and creating an experience that feels particularly connected to Vilalara’s thalassotherapy heritage.

The third practitioner, Dr. João Pestana, is a clinical psychologist specialising in health psychology and will bring a more mind-focused dimension to the week through private sessions exploring Stress & Lifestyle and Nervous System Regulation. These sessions look at areas including stress, sleep, nutrition, activity and everyday habits, combining psychological principles with mind-body approaches to help guests better understand how they respond to stress and how they can create healthier patterns in everyday life.

I really like this combination because it recognises that wellbeing isn't simply about what we do with our bodies; how we sleep, manage stress, move through our daily lives and look after our mental wellbeing is equally important.

Three workshops with something to take home

Alongside the daily classes and private sessions, there are also three workshops during the week, each designed to give guests something practical that they can continue using after their stay.

On 22 September, The Art of Therapeutic Bathing explores how bathing can become much more than a simple daily ritual, whether used for recovery, preparing for sleep or creating a moment of mindfulness. Guests will create their own personalised bath blend using mineral salts, aromatic botanicals and essential oils, and will leave with their own blend, a wellness recipe and expert guidance.

On 24 September, The Ritual of Healthy Skin focuses on professional application techniques, understanding what your skin actually needs and creating a personalised skincare routine, while on 26 September, Discover Your Ayurvedic Dosha offers an introduction to the three doshas and explores how Ayurveda can provide a useful framework for understanding different tendencies in the body, mind and lifestyle.

What I particularly like about these workshops is that they are not simply experiences to enjoy while you are away; each one gives you something practical to take home, whether that is a personalised bathing ritual, a new skincare routine or simple Ayurvedic practices that can become part of your everyday life.

A wellness week at your own pace

Although there is plenty happening throughout the week, I don't think this is an experience where you need to feel that you have to do everything. One of the lovely things about the program is that you can create your own rhythm, choosing the classes and experiences that appeal to you while still having plenty of time to enjoy everything else Vilalara has to offer, from the beach and gardens to the spa and the Atlantic views.

And then, of course, there is the setting itself, which is a very important part of the experience. Vilalara sits above Praia das Gaivotas on the Algarve coast, surrounded by gardens and overlooking the Atlantic, and it is easy to imagine how the combination of sea air, movement, warm seawater treatments and time spent outdoors can help you naturally settle into a slower rhythm.

Why I think this is a week worth knowing about

Wellness travel has evolved considerably, and I think many of us are now looking for experiences that offer more than a few spa treatments or yoga classes alongside a traditional holiday. We want to return home feeling that we have genuinely taken some time for ourselves, perhaps with less tension in our bodies, a little more clarity in our minds and some new tools that we can actually continue using once the holiday is over.

That is what makes Thalasso Legacy Week at Vilalara particularly interesting to me. It brings together 60 years of thalassotherapy heritage with movement, yoga, sound healing, psychology and practical wellness experiences, while still giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and space of the Algarve.

If you have been thinking about a wellness escape to Portugal this September, this could be a lovely opportunity to combine a stay at Vilalara with a deeper exploration of your own wellbeing. With limited capacity, I would recommend looking into the program sooner rather than later.
