Why Taking Time Out for Yourself is Absolutely Essential
I recently read an article by Mia Erickson in Body & Soul about her solo wellness retreat at at COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali. Reading her story reminded me so much of my own time there and how a few days away from daily life can feel like hitting a reset button you didn’t even know you needed.
The Moment You Arrive
There’s something almost magical about arriving in Ubud and heading to the estate. The town itself is full of creativity, but the moment you enter the estate grounds, it’s like the world slows down.
On my first visit, I was greeted with warm smiles, a flower lei, and a sense of calm that wrapped around me like a welcoming hug. The nine hectares of manicured gardens, surrounded by jungle and the River Ayung, create a dreamlike backdrop that immediately puts you at ease. It’s no wonder Como Shambhala Estate was named a Forever Icon in the Condé Nast Traveller Spa Awards.
Your Home Away from Home
On my first visit I stayed in Retreat Villa Shantivana, a two-bedroom villa with a private pool, Jacuzzi, steam and outdoor showers. My Personal Assistant, Wiwiek, made settling in effortless – even unpacking my bags so I could start relaxing straight away.
Before arrival, every guest completes a wellness evaluation to create a personalised program. Mine included acupuncture, QiGong, Pilates, yoga, and treatments like the signature Taksu massage – an invigorating, magical experience that melted away any stress I’d been carrying.
Activities That Refresh Body and Mind
COMO Shambhala Estate also offers plenty of ways to stay active. I tried rock climbing, mountain biking through rice fields, and the daily Estate Walk, which takes you past the Jungle Gym and natural spring pool. Every activity is led by skilled, encouraging staff, making even the first-time experiences fun.
Meals are just as thoughtful. My dietary needs were taken care of by the resident dietician, and I loved both Glow and Kudos House for their fresh, delicious cuisine and warm, attentive staff.
Moments of Calm
Beyond the activities, it’s the quiet moments that make the biggest impact. Watching the sunrise during yoga, enjoying a picnic in the Water Garden, or taking part in a traditional Balinese full moon ceremony all added a sense of peace that stayed with me long after I returned home.
I’ve since returned with a friend and my sister for a mini-break while she was pregnant, and again the sense of calm and reset was incredible and its a firm favourite with my clients and many celebrities.
Why You Should Consider Booking Yourself a Retreat.
Taking time for yourself isn’t indulgent – it’s essential. Stepping away from routines and obligations allows you to recharge so you can show up fully in your life.
