Palasiet Review: Thalassotherapy and Holistic Wellness in Spain
Overlooking the Mediterranean in Benicàssim, on Spain’s east coast, Palasiet Wellness Clinic & Thalasso has been welcoming guests since 1963. Its approach to wellness combines thalassotherapy with nutrition, physical activity, medical support and a range of treatments, with programs tailored to different health and wellbeing goals.
I was interested to see how Palasiet compared with some of the more contemporary wellness retreats I regularly recommend, particularly given its long history and its foundations in thalassotherapy. I spent three nights here on my own, taking part in an à la carte program, which gave me the opportunity to experience a broad selection of the property's facilities, treatments and dining.
Palasiet has a different character from many of the newer luxury wellness resorts. Its strengths lie in its thalassotherapy heritage, breadth of wellness offerings and genuinely warm team. Its Mediterranean setting is another attraction, with the beach and coastline nearby and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors throughout much of the year.
Quick Verdict
Best For: Solo travellers, couples and anyone looking for a health-focused wellness break, particularly those interested in thalassotherapy, relaxation, nutrition, weight management or restoring healthier routines.
Not Ideal For: Travellers whose priority is sleek, contemporary luxury accommodation, or those primarily seeking an advanced diagnostics-led longevity program.
Recommended Stay: Five nights for a good introduction to Palasiet. Allow seven nights or more for a more structured health program.
Standout Features: The combination of thalassotherapy, an integrative wellness approach and genuinely warm, personal service.
Worth Knowing: The rooms are comfortable and the views are a highlight, but I would choose Palasiet for its wellness offering rather than the accommodation alone.
My Verdict: I would recommend it to someone looking for a credible, personalised wellness experience with a therapeutic focus, without necessarily wanting the intensity of a highly structured medical wellness retreat.
Arriving at Palasiet
My journey to Palasiet involved a delayed train, but the team stayed in touch to make sure my driver was there when I arrived at Benicàssim. The transfer from the local station took less than ten minutes, and I immediately felt welcome when I arrived.
The property sits into the hillside above the Mediterranean, with the beach and long sandy coastline below and the mountains behind. When I began my train journey in Barcelona it was raining, but as I got closer I caught glimpses of the sea and, eventually, the clouds parted and the sun came out.
The welcome from the team was very warm. They came out to greet me with hugs and kisses, which was a little different from the more formal welcome you often receive at a larger hotel and gave me an immediate sense of the personality of the place. They then spent nearly two hours showing me around and explaining the clinic, the different programs and the philosophy behind the property.
They were clearly proud of Palasiet and its wellness offering, but more importantly, they were proud of the difference they make to people's lives.
Accommodation & Sea Views
I stayed in room 308, which had lovely views over the Mediterranean and surrounding landscape. The two balconies were my favourite part of the room and became somewhere I enjoyed sitting and taking in the seemingly endless sea views between treatments.
Palasiet has 78 rooms across six categories, with most offering terraces and views towards the sea and bay.
My room was comfortable and I slept well. It was dark at night, the bed was comfortable and, despite a wedding taking place at the Palasiet Club across the road on my first night, I didn't experience any significant outside noise. I could occasionally hear sound through the walls, so I'd still recommend packing earplugs, as I do whenever I travel.
The accommodation has a more traditional feel than some of the newer luxury wellness properties. To me, it was more like staying in a friend's beautiful, very large summer home than a highly polished five-star hotel. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and there are plenty of lovely little places around the property to sit and read or soak up the sun. My room was comfortable, with a wonderful sea view, but it doesn't have the sleek, contemporary finish you might expect from a newer luxury resort.
Wellness Approach
At Palasiet, the wellness experience is built around five pillars: thalassotherapy, nutrition, physical activity, specialised medical treatments and emotional balance. These elements are brought together rather than treated as separate services. Your initial consultation and health history help the team understand what you are looking to achieve, allowing treatments, nutrition and activities to be tailored to your goals and preferences.
The team explained that Palasiet takes a holistic, integrative approach, and I agree. Doctors and other health and wellness professionals are part of the team, but the experience isn't centred solely on medical testing or interventions. Instead, there is an emphasis on looking at the bigger picture, whether your priority is stress and relaxation, supporting your physical, mental or emotional wellbeing, managing your weight, navigating menopause or simply getting back into healthier routines.
Thalassotherapy
Thalassotherapy has been at the heart of Palasiet since the clinic opened in 1963. Warm seawater, hydrotherapy jets and specialised circuits are central to its therapeutic offering, with treatments designed to support relaxation, circulation, mobility and physical recovery.
I experienced the Biomarine Circuit, Phlebitis Circuit and a thalassotherapy bath during my stay. The Biomarine Circuit was a particular favourite, combining warm seawater with hydrotherapy jets, water beds, whirlpool areas, a sauna and steam room. I found it incredibly relaxing and could easily have spent longer there.
Both swimming pools on the property are also filled with seawater, reflecting how central it is to the Palasiet experience. For guests following a wellness program, thalassotherapy is a core component, with sessions incorporated into the daily treatment plan.
The Treatments
At the beginning of my stay, I started with the Emocosmética Disconnect & Reconnect treatment. This was a lovely introduction to the Palasiet approach, with a surprisingly strong olfactory element that made it a real delight for the senses. The treatment uses active neurocosmetic ingredients formulated around relaxation and the nervous system, with the aim of helping to release physical tension.
Over the rest of my stay, I experienced a medical consultation, a TANITA body composition assessment, a cranio-facial massage and several other treatments. The TANITA assessment gave me the rather pleasing result of a metabolic age 15 years younger than my actual age. Perhaps all those years visiting wellness retreats are paying off! The cranio-facial massage delivered almost immediate relaxation, while the Hydrafacial Deluxe left my skin glowing.
Having experienced such a broad selection, I came away with a much better understanding of how the different treatments can be combined during a stay. While I would often recommend one of Palasiet's established programs, these aren't simply fixed itineraries. They can be adapted to the individual, taking into account your goals, preferences and medical history, which is an important part of the integrative approach.
Mediterranean Dining, Guided by Wellness
Food is an important part of the Palasiet experience rather than something that sits separately from the wellness program. The Natural Restaurant is set within the Mediterranean gardens overlooking the bay, and the cuisine follows a healthy Mediterranean approach, with the nutrition and kitchen teams working together to adapt meals according to individual needs.
At breakfast, guests can choose between different set menu styles and make substitutions depending on what they feel like or what has been recommended as part of their program. During my stay, I tried the Mediterranean, Palasiet and Healthy Breakfast options and enjoyed the variety.
Lunch and dinner follow the same philosophy. Guests who aren't following a specific nutritional program can choose from a four-course meal, although you can skip any course if you prefer. For those following a nutritional plan, meals are pre-planned according to their individual needs, but there is still some room for choice, which can be discussed with the team each day.
After a long travel day, the team suggested room service and, on my first evening, I had a goat's cheese salad, sea bass and coconut flan. The portions were generous, everything arrived quickly and it was genuinely delicious. I couldn't finish it all, which isn't something I often experience when I'm on retreat.
What I particularly liked was that healthy eating here doesn't mean taking the enjoyment out of food. There is a clear nutritional framework behind what is served, but flavour and variety remain important too.
The Team At Palasiet
The warmth of the team was something I noticed from the moment I arrived, and it continued throughout my stay, from the clinic to the restaurant. There is a genuine effort to make guests comfortable, including trying to have staff who speak their language look after them where possible.
English can occasionally be limited, particularly with some of the therapists and drivers, but the team make a real effort to communicate and help. For me, that felt consistent with the overall personality of Palasiet. The service is warm and personal rather than highly formal, and there is a sense that the people working here genuinely believe in what they are doing.
Who Is Palasiet Best Suited To?
I think Palasiet will appeal particularly to someone who wants to feel supported throughout their wellness stay but doesn't necessarily want the intensity or clinical environment of a highly structured medical wellness retreat.
It works well for someone who wants to address a particular goal, whether that is stress, physical conditioning, nutrition, weight management or simply getting back into healthier routines. Equally, you don't have to arrive with a major health concern or know exactly which treatments you need. The initial consultation and the team's guidance help shape the experience around your individual needs.
One of Palasiet's strengths is the flexibility to adapt its established wellness programs to your goals and preferences, rather than simply selecting accommodation and adding treatments independently.
Palasiet may also be worth considering for guests with some mobility limitations. During my stay, I noticed two lifts and a stair lift, and the thalassotherapy pool had a ramp for access. However, accessibility will depend on individual needs, so if mobility is a concern, I'd recommend discussing your requirements with the team before booking, including access to treatment areas and the suitability of available rooms.
Getting To Palasiet In Benicàssim
Getting to Palasiet is relatively straightforward once you are in the region. Benicàssim has its own train station, which is how I arrived, and the transfer to Palasiet took less than ten minutes.
For international travellers, Valencia is likely to be the most practical airport, with Castellón also worth considering depending on your flight options. If you're travelling from further afield, I'd allow some extra time to settle in, particularly if you're arriving after a long-haul flight.
The nearby beach, coastal walks and surrounding mountains offer plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors during your stay. Bikes are available for guests, the team leads guided walks several times a week, and hikes can be arranged as well.
How Long Should You Stay?
For someone coming to Palasiet for their own wellness break, I would recommend at least five nights. This gives you enough time to settle in, have your initial consultation and assessments, experience a selection of treatments and still have time to enjoy the property and its surroundings.
If you are coming with a specific health goal and want to follow one of the more structured programs, I would look at seven nights or longer. Palasiet also offers shorter wellness getaways, so the right length really depends on what you are hoping to get from the stay.
My Take On Palasiet
After three nights experiencing Palasiet, I see its strength in the way it combines the therapeutic foundations of a traditional European health resort with a holistic, personalised approach to wellness.
While medical professionals form part of the multidisciplinary team, Palasiet's offering brings together thalassotherapy, nutrition, physical activity, specialised treatments and emotional wellbeing within an individually tailored experience. For me, its defining strength is this combination of therapeutic expertise and a broader approach to supporting wellbeing, rather than a primary focus on diagnostics-led longevity medicine.
For someone who wants to take time out, focus on their health and feel supported without necessarily committing to an intensive medical program, Palasiet is well worth considering.

How long to stay: Allow at least five nights for a wellness escape, or seven nights or more if you're following a structured health program. This gives you time to settle in, complete your assessments and experience the treatments without rushing.
What to know about the atmosphere: Palasiet has a more traditional European health-resort feel than a contemporary luxury wellness resort, and the thalasso facilities are also open to the public, but access is managed around the schedule of in-house guests.
Staying connected: Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and the Palasiet app makes it easy to keep track of your schedule. Guests are asked to refrain from using mobile phones in the restaurant out of consideration for others.
Food, coffee and alcohol: Nutrition is central to the Palasiet experience, but the enjoyment of food remains important too. Meals are varied, flavourful and adapted to individual nutritional needs. Coffee, wine, champagne and beer are also available, although your program may include specific recommendations or restrictions.

My tip: If you're following a wellness program, aim to arrive on a Monday if possible. The team operates with reduced staffing on Sundays, so arriving on Monday gives you the best opportunity to get your consultations and assessments underway with the full team available.
