Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve Review: Thalassotherapy, Wellness & Coastal Luxury
Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve is a property that feels very much at home in its surroundings. Set above the Atlantic, its low-rise buildings follow the contours of the landscape, with soft pink tones, rounded forms and curved walls that give the architecture a character all of its own. It was clearly designed with the setting in mind, rather than simply built to make the most of the sea views. There is something quite special about the way the architecture, gardens and natural landscape come together.
The gardens are equally impressive. Lush, mature and beautifully maintained, they are a significant part of the experience, with planting that feels abundant without being overdone. I was told that some members of the gardening team have been looking after the grounds for more than 30 years, which says a lot about the care that goes into maintaining the property. It has a sense of maturity and established character that can be difficult to replicate in newer resorts.
Vilalara also has a long history in wellness, with thalassotherapy at the heart of its offering. Today, this sits alongside an extensive spa, wellness treatments, activities and a range of structured stays. It is not a dedicated wellness retreat in the same sense as some of the more immersive properties I visit, but rather a luxury seaside resort with a substantial wellness offering. During my stay, I wanted to experience how these elements come together, and where Vilalara sits within the wider wellness travel landscape.
In 2026, Vilalara marked its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of wellness by the Atlantic and its long-standing connection to thalassotherapy. I explored this heritage further in my article on Thalasso Legacy Week at Vilalara, which brought together the property's traditional thalassotherapy offering with a broader program of movement, yoga, breathwork and holistic wellbeing.
Quick Verdict
Best For: Relaxation, thalassotherapy, spa-focused escapes, couples and families looking for a luxury seaside holiday with wellness experiences.
Not Ideal For: Travellers seeking a fully immersive, dedicated wellness retreat, an adults-only environment or a property that is easy to navigate with limited mobility.
Recommended Stay: 4–7 nights for a relaxing escape with time to enjoy the spa, thalassotherapy and wider resort. Longer stays work well for guests following a more structured program.
Standout Feature: The combination of Atlantic seawater therapies, an extensive spa offering and a genuinely warm, approachable team.
Worth Knowing: Vilalara is a family-friendly resort with a relatively spread-out layout, including steps, slopes and uneven paths.
My Verdict: Vilalara is a lovely choice for a restorative Algarve escape, particularly if thalassotherapy and spa treatments are high on your list. I found the spa team to be its greatest asset: warm, experienced and genuinely invested in making guests feel comfortable. While it offers a range of structured wellness programs, I see its greatest appeal in relaxation, thalassotherapy and restorative experiences rather than the more immersive, highly specialised approach of a dedicated wellness retreat.
My Experience at Vilalara
My stay at Vilalara gave me the opportunity to experience several different aspects of the resort's wellness offering, from the initial assessment and guided activities to its thalassotherapy treatments and spa. Everything was very well organised. My experience began with a tour of the spa, followed by a wellness assessment with Pedro, one of the personal trainers. This included a bioimpedance analysis and a conversation about my general wellbeing and what I wanted to get out of my stay. I liked Pedro's approach. He was knowledgeable but very approachable, and took the time to explain how the team could adapt the experience to suit individual guests.
Over the following days, I tried a selection of treatments and activities, including Inner Flow Yoga, The Art of Breathing, the Thalassa Flow sequence and an Insomnia Focus treatment. I also had a personalised Biologique Recherche facial following a skin analysis. It was an excellent introduction to the range of experiences available, and I particularly enjoyed having a mixture of movement, water-based therapies and more traditional spa treatments.
The spa team made a particularly positive impression. My therapists were warm and attentive, checking in throughout treatments and making me feel comfortable. Cristina, who looked after me for several of my treatments, was lovely, with a great sense of humour, and we shared plenty of laughs. Daniel, who guided my immersive jets pool experience, had been at the spa for more than 25 years. That kind of experience and continuity is something I always appreciate.
I also appreciated the handwritten notes left in my suite by members of the team, including Bernardo, the Spa & Wellness Manager. One message in particular stayed with me: “You are exactly where you need to be.” It was a thoughtful, personal touch that felt very much in keeping with the spirit of a wellness stay, and a lovely reminder that the experience is about more than just the treatments.
Beyond the wellness offering, I really enjoyed the property itself. The gardens are beautiful, the grounds established and carefully looked after, and the pools and coastal setting make it easy to spend time outdoors. I also enjoyed my à la carte meals, with fresh, delicious food throughout my stay. I didn't get to experience the shared dining concept at Raízes, but it's definitely something I'd like to try on my next visit.
I came away feeling that Vilalara is at its best when it allows guests to combine the restorative benefits of its spa and thalassotherapy offering with the freedom to enjoy a luxury resort holiday. It was a lovely balance of wellness experiences and time to simply enjoy the setting, without feeling that every part of the stay needed to be structured.
Accommodation
Vilalara offers a range of suites and larger residences, making it suitable for couples, solo travellers and families. Accommodation is generally generous in size, with separate living areas and balconies or terraces, so there is room to properly settle in rather than simply having somewhere to sleep. Depending on the category and location, views look out over the gardens, pools, resort or Atlantic.
One thing worth knowing is that the layouts vary, even within the same room category. If you have a particular preference for the arrangement of the living space, bathroom or terrace, then please let me know and I can pass those requests on to the team at Vilalara, where they will do their best to match you with your preferred layout.
My suite was very comfortable, particularly the bed, and I slept exceptionally well throughout my stay. It was lovely and dark at night, and there were a few thoughtful details that made it feel more suited to a wellness stay than a conventional hotel room. A salt lamp, lavender vapouriser, yoga mat, meditation cushion and yoga block were all provided.
I used the vapouriser and practised yoga nidra before bed, which made for a particularly restful sleep. I did hear some noise from the room above earlier in the evening, so I would favour a top-floor room if available, particularly for light sleepers. The higher position may also offer more panoramic views.
Programs & Experiences
Vilalara offers a range of wellness programs designed around different goals, from relaxation and stress recovery to skin health, weight management and fitness. Thalassotherapy remains central to the offering, complemented by spa treatments, movement, fitness and holistic wellbeing practices.
The current programs cover six main areas:
Thalassotherapy Healing
Drawing on Vilalara's long-standing thalassotherapy heritage, this program combines jet pools, marine wraps and mineral-rich baths to help relieve stress and muscular tension. It is a natural choice for guests looking for a restorative, spa-led escape.
Slow Ageing
Focused on skin health and rejuvenation, Slow Ageing combines advanced facial treatments, mindful rituals and marine therapies. It will appeal to guests looking to combine beauty treatments with a broader sense of relaxation and wellbeing.
Stress Relief & Recovery
Designed for guests experiencing stress, anxiety or emotional fatigue, this program uses holistic practices to support relaxation and emotional resilience. It may be particularly appealing to busy professionals looking for time to recharge.
Fitness & Vitality
Combining personalised training, body remineralisation and recovery practices, Fitness & Vitality is designed to improve physical fitness, energy and overall vitality.
Yoga & Pilates Alignment
Bringing together yoga and Pilates, this program focuses on strength, posture and the mind-body connection, with an emphasis on conscious movement and breathing.
Detox & Weight Management
This program focuses on weight balance, reducing bloating and water retention, and developing healthier lifestyle habits. It is a more goal-oriented option for guests looking to make changes to their health and wellbeing.
The programs offer different areas of focus, although Vilalara's approach is not limited to following a fixed schedule. There is scope to combine treatments, activities and time enjoying the resort, making the experience suitable for guests who want some structure without committing to an intensive wellness retreat.
Wellness Facilities, Treatments & Practitioners
The spa is at the heart of Vilalara's wellness offering, with its thalassotherapy facilities providing something a little different from the treatment menus found at many luxury resorts. The use of seawater, marine-based treatments and the wet area is a particular draw, alongside a broader selection of massage, body and skincare therapies.
An important update for 2027: Vilalara is undertaking a renovation of its spa during the hotel's seasonal closure, which begins on 15 November 2026. The hotel is scheduled to reopen on 15 February 2027, with the spa renovation expected to be completed in time for reopening.
Treatments worth knowing about
Vilalara Ritual - This was one of my favourite treatments during the stay. It combines exfoliation, a body wrap, head massage and full-body massage, with a mixture of relaxing and more energising techniques. It also incorporated stretching, which added another dimension to the treatment. It felt generous and comprehensive, rather than simply being a conventional massage.
Thalassotherapy treatments - The resort offers a variety of seawater-based experiences, including immersive jet pools, jet showers, marine baths and mineral or marine-based wraps. These can be enjoyed individually or as part of a more structured sequence. My Thalassa Flow afternoon brought several of these elements together, making it a particularly good introduction to the resort's thalassotherapy heritage.
Insomnia Focus - Designed with relaxation in mind, this treatment focuses on the décolletage, neck, head and face. My session incorporated CBD oil and massage techniques, and was a nice alternative to a full-body treatment.
Personalised facials - The spa also offers Biologique Recherche facials. I finished my stay with a skin analysis followed by a personalised treatment, which was a lovely way to round off the experience for anyone interested in combining spa relaxation with more targeted skincare.
Daily Activities & Experiences
Although the spa is a major part of the experience, there is plenty to do beyond treatments. Vilalara has the feel of a traditional luxury resort, with swimming pools, gardens, a beach, fitness facilities and court sports alongside its scheduled wellness activities.
I joined two group sessions during my stay, both led by Gudrun Docherty, a yoga therapist and movement specialist based in the Algarve.
Inner Flow Yoga used wireless headphones, allowing participants to listen to the instructor and music without the usual background distractions. It was a slightly different take on a yoga class and helped create a more focused atmosphere.
The Art of Breathing combined gentle tissue work using a soft ball with diaphragmatic breathing techniques and an exploration of 360-degree expansion. It was a thoughtful session, particularly for anyone interested in understanding how they breathe and where they may be holding tension. Although scheduled as a group activity, my session ended up being one-to-one.
Both had a clear purpose and were delivered by someone with specialist knowledge. For guests who like to stay active, Vilalara offers tennis, padel and pickleball courts. I was advised that court use was complimentary during my visit, with racket hire charged separately. These are useful additions for couples and families, or anyone who enjoys incorporating a little more movement into their holiday, and coaching sessions were also available.
Pools, Beach & Resort Setting
The landscaped grounds lead down towards a small stretch of sandy beach beneath the cliffs. It has a very intimate feel, and during my visit it was shared with just one other beach concession. I liked having the option to spend time by the sea without the feel of a large, busy public beach.
There are, however, steps and some uneven paths on the way down. The resort itself is spread across sloping grounds, so it isn't the easiest property to navigate for anyone with limited mobility. There are adapted accommodation options, but accessibility across the wider resort is more challenging.
Vilalara is also family-friendly, which is worth factoring into the type of stay you're looking for. Families have plenty of space and facilities to enjoy, while guests seeking a consistently quiet or adults-only wellness environment may prefer a different style of property, particularly during school holiday periods.
Dining & Nutrition
Vilalara has a good variety of dining options, with restaurants covering Portuguese cuisine, Italian dishes, Mediterranean cooking and more refined seafood-led dining. The resort also places an emphasis on local produce and seasonal ingredients.
The options include:
A Costa Mar e Brasas: Portuguese dishes in a relaxed seafront setting, open for lunch and dinner.
Coral Éden do Mar: A more refined Atlantic dining experience, included in the Michelin Guide Portugal 2026. It offers a special dining experience on selected evenings.
Trattoria Pantaleone: Italian-inspired cooking incorporating Algarvian ingredients. It is a smaller restaurant and dinner reservations are recommended.
Raízes – Horta da Terra: A produce-led concept focusing on seasonal ingredients, cooking over fire and shared dining.
Vento: A Mediterranean offering by the Cascades Pool, serving lunch.
There is also room service, and dinner reservations can be arranged through the resort's web app.
I really enjoyed my meals at Vilalara. The food was fresh and delicious, and I had a particularly memorable dessert at A-Costa one evening. The dark chocolate mousse was a standout, and I was perfectly placed to watch the sunset. It was a lovely dinner in a relaxed setting, and I would happily return.
For guests who prefer a lighter diet or are following a specific wellness program, a full anti-inflammatory menu can also be provided. This offers additional flexibility for guests with particular nutritional goals. Overall, dining at Vilalara has plenty of variety to suit different tastes and occasions.
Service & Hospitality
Service at Vilalara felt relaxed and personable, in keeping with the overall atmosphere of the resort. What I appreciated most was that the experience didn't feel overly formal or impersonal, despite the size and five-star positioning of the property. There was a genuine warmth to the interactions I had, which made it easy to settle in and enjoy the stay.
Where Vilalara Excels
There are several things I think Vilalara does particularly well:
Thalassotherapy: Its long-standing connection to seawater therapies gives the spa a distinctive identity and a reason to visit beyond a conventional resort treatment menu.
The spa team: The warmth, experience and genuine care of the practitioners made a real difference to my stay.
A beautiful setting: The architecture, mature gardens, pools and coastal position create a distinctive environment that feels closely connected to the landscape.
Comfortable accommodation: Generous suites and residences, comfortable beds and thoughtful in-room touches make it easy to relax.
Flexibility: Guests can enjoy a few treatments as part of a holiday or choose a more structured wellness stay.
A broader resort experience: Restaurants, pools, court sports and family facilities make it appealing to guests who want wellness without giving up the feel of a traditional luxury holiday.
Getting There & How Long to Stay
Vilalara is located in Porches on Portugal's southern Algarve coast. Faro Airport is the most convenient airport for most international arrivals, with the onward journey by road. The drive is generally around 40 minutes, depending on traffic and the route.
For a relaxing spa break, I would suggest allowing four to seven nights. This gives you time to enjoy the treatments, thalassotherapy facilities and activities, while still leaving plenty of room to enjoy the gardens, pools and beach without feeling as though every day needs to be scheduled.
If you're booking one of the more structured wellness programs, the recommended duration will depend on the particular experience. Some are designed around three nights, while others run for four, five or seven nights. I'd generally lean towards a longer stay if the intention is to make wellness the main focus rather than simply enjoy a few treatments during a holiday.
The time of year will also influence the atmosphere. Vilalara is a family-friendly resort, so if a quieter stay is important, I would favour a period outside the main school holidays.

The Wellness Travel Expert Assessment
Vilalara occupies an interesting position in the wellness travel landscape. It has a genuine history in thalassotherapy and a substantial spa offering, but it is also a luxury seaside resort where wellness sits alongside the broader holiday experience.
For me, its greatest strength is the combination of the setting, the thalassotherapy treatments and, above all, the people delivering the experience. I enjoyed the treatments, found the team genuinely caring and appreciated the flexibility to make the stay my own.
I would be particularly happy to recommend Vilalara to someone looking for a restorative break, a spa-focused escape or an introduction to thalassotherapy. It also works well for couples or families who want to enjoy a luxury holiday with meaningful wellness experiences available.
Where I would be more selective is with clients looking for a deeply immersive or highly specialised wellness retreat. Vilalara does offer more targeted programs and can accommodate specific dietary requirements, but its overall character remains that of a resort rather than a dedicated destination wellness centre.
My recommendation: Vilalara is a lovely choice for a restorative Algarve escape, particularly if you enjoy spa treatments, seawater therapies and a beautiful coastal setting. I would choose it for the thalassotherapy, the warmth of its team and the opportunity to slow down.

Vilalara at a Glance
Best Time to Visit: April to June and September to October are my preferred times to visit Vilalara. The weather is generally warm and sunny, making it a good time to enjoy the gardens, outdoor facilities and beach, without the intensity of the peak summer holiday season. Vilalara is a family-friendly resort, so if your priority is a quieter, more restorative wellness escape, I'd favour the shoulder seasons over July and August.
Rainy Season / Seasonal Considerations: The Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Most of the rainfall occurs between November and March, although there can still be plenty of sunshine during the cooler months. Winter is a good option for a quieter spa escape, but temperatures are less reliable for enjoying the beach and outdoor pools. Even in spring and autumn, evenings can be cooler, so it's worth packing a light layer.
Typical Stay: For a general resort or spa escape, I would suggest 4–7 nights. This allows enough time to enjoy the spa, thalassotherapy facilities and wider resort without feeling rushed. Shorter stays are also possible for guests looking for a focused thalassotherapy break. If wellness is the main reason for your visit, rather than an added element to a holiday, I'd generally recommend a longer stay, with the ideal duration depending on the program and treatments involved.
Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi and mobile coverage are available throughout the hotel.
Alcohol & Coffee: Vilalara is a luxury resort rather than a dedicated wellness retreat, so guests are free to enjoy wine and other alcoholic drinks at the restaurants and bars. Coffee is available as part of the usual dining experience, with no general restriction for resort guests.
Getting There: The nearest airport is Faro (FAO), approximately 40–45 minutes away by car, depending on traffic. Private transfers can be arranged, or you may prefer to hire a car at the airport.
